Caring For Country

South Central Cairn Curran Water Conservation Project.

The project involves a series of educational and community awareness activities to address the threatposed to the local
seed growing industry by invasive weeds, which could pollute crops and destroy income.

The project will address the need to control invasive pests and noxious weeds in the area. Pest animals such as foxes and rabbits find harbour in these weeds.

Regenerated areas will be fenced and a coordinated fox and rabbit eradication program will be undertaken.

Farm walks will be organised on selected properties to demonstrate the benefits of efficient programs. Community groups will meet to publish newsletters and press groups will meet to publish newsletters and press releases and there is an ongoing commitment from participants to continue the program.

Victorian Gorse Taskforce

The VGT is an advisory committee made up of passionate individuals and Natural Resource Management organisation representatives. Currently the major financial supporter of VGT is the Biosecurity Victoria division of the Victorian Department of Primary Industries. The VGT is led by active Victorian community members that are concerned about the impacts of one of Victoria's worst invasive plants. The VGT uses investment attracted from government to develop community-led projects that aim to rid areas of Victoria from this pest and reduce its impact where this is not possible. Gorse control is a long term assignment and the VGT aims to encourage community-led action with funding support where possible.

Gorse (Ulex europaeus L.) is an exotic plant from Europe. It has been identified in Australia as a Weed of National Significance (WoNS) due to its high level of invasiveness, potential for spread, and economic and environmental impacts.

Blampied Kooroocheang Landcare group has been involved with the VGT in Gorse removal in the local area of its members.
